NIMAA EXTERNSHIP SITES
An important feature of the NIMAA experience is student participation in externship sites during the seven month program. Externship sites are carefully chosen to provide opportunities for students to practice there skills in high performing team based primary health care centers. Externship sites often find that NIMAA students who have practiced their skills at a local site make great employees. However, externships are under no obligation to hire graduating students.

Become A NIMAA Partner
The ability to hire medical assistants trained to work in high-performing health centers, delivering exceptional team-based primary care, is an increasing challenge for practices. We decided to address this mounting challenge head on. The National Institute for Medical Assistant Advancement (NIMAA), created by Community Health Center, Inc. of Connecticut and Salud Family Health Centers of Colorado, is training medical assistants to serve as essential members of the modern healthcare team. With support from a growing group of primary care clinics and healthcare experts, NIMAA is currently seeking partners to serve as externship sites for our next cohort scheduled to begin in September 2019.

- An executed model of care with medical assistants as essential members of the person-centered medical home team
Responsibilities of a NIMAA Externship Site
- Host medical assistant candidates for the seven-month externship in the NIMAA Program
- Appoint a NIMAA Program Coordinator
- Appoint a NIMAA Skills Coach; qualified to confirm and improve MA skills (monthly session with NIMAA)
- Designate a qualified preceptor for each medical assistant candidate
- Host NIMAA candidates in the healthcare facility four hours daily
- Preceptors attend the NIMAA preceptor training
- Develop the MA Workforce to Meet Your Needs
NIMAA Support for Externship Sites
- Experienced faculty and instructional staff, regular live and taped lectures and discussions
- Complete online curriculum and program with textbooks and supporting information technology
- Preceptor training program, with guidance for practicing and measuring specific clinical skills
- Support for externship site program coordinator, skills coach, and preceptors
- Manage all enrollment, grading, certification and grievance issues
- NIMAA and the externship site share an ongoing relationship through the entire school year.
Externship Site Advantages
A Pipeline to Great Employees
NIMAA externship sites have a direct pipeline to medical assistants who graduate from an innovative program that prepares them to serve as active members of healthcare teams. With today’s growing emphasis on team-based care and holistic treatment, the role of the medical assistant is expanding and increasing in importance.
In a recent national survey of chief medical officers and chief executive officers of federally qualified health centers conducted by the Community Health Center, Inc., 64 percent said they deliver primary care in teams with medical assistants serving as active members and 75 percent said they had to do most of the training after hiring them. NIMAA will eliminate health centers burden of post-hire training.
